Job Description:
Position Summary The Department of Surgery at the University of
North Carolina is inviting applications for a full-time academic
podiatrist to assume the role of Podiatry Section Chief within our
Division of Vascular Surgery. As one of nine clinical divisions in
the Department, the Division of Vascular Surgery is comprised of 12
faculty members who deliver comprehensive clinical services to
provide exemplary care for patients with lower extremity wounds and
podiatric needs. This position is offered as an Open Rank, Open
Track Academic appointment (0.5 FTE to 1.0 FTE ), with rank and
track determined by the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The Section Chief will be responsible for providing strategic
leadership, clinical oversight, and administrative direction for
the Podiatry Section. This leadership role integrates patient care
with administrative responsibilities, promoting the delivery of
high-quality, evidence-based podiatric care across both inpatient
and outpatient settings. The successful candidate will collaborate
closely with multidisciplinary teams including vascular surgery,
orthopedics, wound care, endocrinology, infectious disease, and
primary care to optimize outcomes for patients with complex foot
and ankle disorders, diabetic limb salvage needs, and wound care
challenges. Faculty in the Division are expected to embrace all
three missions of the department and school of medicine: clinical
care, education, and research. We operate as a multidisciplinary
practice dedicated to limb preservation, employing the Toe and Flow
model of care. Our integrated team which includes podiatrists,
vascular surgeons, wound care specialists, and advanced
practitioners works collaboratively to manage peripheral arterial
disease ( PAD ), diabetic foot complications, and complex lower
extremity wounds. Our mission centers on reducing amputation rates
and enhancing quality of life through advanced vascular
interventions (‘flow’) combined with expert podiatric and wound
management (‘toe’). As Section Chief, the incumbent will lead
clinical and administrative operations of the Podiatry Section,
with a principal focus on advancing our multidisciplinary Limb
Salvage Program. Responsibilities include oversight of all aspects
of podiatric care, encompassing both surgical and non-surgical
management of foot and ankle pathology, diabetic wound care, and
limb preservation strategies. This position requires effective
collaboration with vascular surgery, wound care, endocrinology,
infectious disease, and rehabilitation services to ensure
comprehensive, evidence-based care for patients facing complex
lower extremity conditions. Candidates should demonstrate a
commitment to the education of medical students, residents, and
fellows. Research engagement is highly encouraged and may span a
broad spectrum of interests, including but not limited to clinical,
outcomes, health services, basic science, translational, ethics,
education, or global surgery research. Applicants must be committed
to providing high-quality clinical care to UNC’s patient population
and possess strong interpersonal skills, enabling effective
collaboration with colleagues throughout the UNC Health System.
Exceptional candidates demonstrating outstanding skill and
achievement may be considered for additional leadership
opportunities within the Department of Surgery; these roles are
contingent upon departmental needs at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience Preferred
candidates will have experience in diabetic foot care, wound
management, surgical procedures, and collaborative care within a
team environment. Experience in ankle management, general podiatry,
and podiatric surgery is also relevant to this position and
preferred. Preferred qualifications include previous roles as a
department director or residency director. Applicants with research
experience in clinical outcomes, quality assessment, health
services research, basic science, translational research, or
podiatric medicine and surgery are encouraged to apply. Experience
in wound care and limb salvage strongly preferred.
